IMS undergoes transformation ahead of Indy 500

first_imgIndy 500 practice, May 2014.Indy 500 practice, May 2014.INDIANAPOLIS — When Indianapolis Motor Speedway added a road course to its infield in 2000, track officials set aside two weeks to convert the road course — which uses portions of the IMS oval — back to the conventional format for the Indianapolis 500.On Sunday, most of that undertaking was completed in a few hours. The quiet and nearly empty facility was abuzz with forklifts and mobile cranes Sunday morning as the transformation from 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course to 2.5-mile oval progressed quickly and efficiently. The majority of the tasks to accomplish the primary goal — to have the oval ready for practice for the Indianapolis 500 at 2 p.m. ET Monday — were met Sunday afternoon. Will Power dominates Grand Prix of Indianapolis“It is complicated,” IMS president Doug Boles told USA TODAY Sports. “There’s so much that has to be moved — from the concrete barriers to the curbing. It’s a big undertaking.”Two separate groups of workers teamed to complete the duties. One group is employed by IMS, the other a group of contractors who operate the heavy equipment the speedway doesn’t own. They moved tires barriers, temporary concrete barriers and fencing, and asphalt curbing from the corners. The work began shortly after Will Power crossed the finish line Saturday evening as the winner of the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis, and final touches will be made Monday morning before practice resumes for the Indianapolis 500.“How long it takes depends on weather and how the grass conditions are,” Boles said. “But they’ll get it done in a day — a day and a half to make sure everything is properly finished.”By Sunday morning, the bright green banners advertising Angie’s List had been removed from the track walls, along with a banner from a metal overhang near the start-finish line. The overhang was scheduled to be taken down later Sunday.Later this week, advertising signage on the pagoda — the seven-story structure in the infield that houses track operations — will come down. “It’s not just the track that gets converted, it’s also all the signage,” Boles said.Doyel: New IMS location: corner of tradition, innovationThe differences from the original road-course layout, which held the Formula One U.S. Grand Prix from 2000 to 2007, and the modern layout make the conversion back to the oval more labor-intensive. Most of that additional work stems from the Turn 12-13-14 complex, which take the cars off the oval and back into the infield before returning at the entrance to Turn 1 on the oval. The person who’s competed on both layouts prefers the new one.“To tell you the truth, it’s a really good road course,” Juan Pablo Montoya said after finishing third Saturday. “I ran here in Formula One. It was awful, awful, awful. They changed it, made it into a really good one. We’re really happy with it.”last_img read more

I think the issue would be the mismatch with the helmet – something Seattle doesn’t need to worry about when they go gray. Still, I’d prefer the gray jersey over the white for this game. I’m usually TOTALLY against this, but I wouldn’t mind if they surprised everyone and came out in white Pat Patriot throwbacks. The contrast of old vs new would be fantastic (though I don’t want to see that uniform win anything or for anyone to clamor to bring back Pat. Khabib Nurmagomedov talks about UFC GOAT but there are 6 contenders and no Conor McGregor

first_img While the ongoing debate regarding who’s the greatest MMA fighter of all time continues to rage in the UFC through social media, UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov recently named his six greatest UFC fighters of all time. The undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov himself has been billed as one of MMA’s greats by several veterans. However, “The Eagle” does not consider himself the best. Though Khabib Nurmagomedov boasts an undefeated MMA record of 28-0, Khabib believes that Jon Jones and Demetrious Johnson are ahead of him in the conversation of the sport’s legends. Also Read | UFC news: Khabib next fight might be postponed, following medial complications in familyUFC news: Khabib Nurmagomedov names six greatest fighters of all time in UFC Raj Sarkar First Published: 28th May, 2020 17:29 IST Written By Last Updated: 28th May, 2020 17:29 IST Khabib Nurmagomedov Talks About UFC GOAT But There Are 6 Contenders And No Conor McGregor Undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov recently named his six MMA greats but stopped short of mentioning Conor McGregor. Following the holy month of Ramadan and his family’s medical condition, it appears that Khabib Nurmagomedov will be forced to postpone his UFC return to September. Khabib earlier claimed that he would be returning to UFC action by July. However, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s family has since contracted COVID-19, with 20 members of his family testing positive for coronavirus. Khabib’s father had also been suffering from heart complications due to COVID-19 and the 57-year-old was put into a medically induced coma in Moscow earlier this month. Upon his return, whenever that is, Khabib will go up against Justin Gaethje. Also Read | UFC news: GSP says Khabib is a “kryptonite” for Conor McGregorAlso Read | UFC news: Khabib next fight might be postponed, Conor McGregor hints at returnImage courtesy: YouTube of CBS During an interview with CBS Sports ‘State of Combat’, Khabib Nurmagomedov was asked whether he sees himself as an all-time great in the UFC, to which the Dagestani said that he is unsure about that. “Talk about like ‘oh I am the greatest of all time?’ I don’t know. We have Jon Jones, Fedor [Emelianenko]. We have Demetrious Johnson, we have Henry Cejudo, we have DC [Daniel Cormier], Anderson Silva and a lot of guys.” Khabib Nurmagomedov added that if not the best, he is definitely one of the best in UFC history. Though Fedor Emelianenko has never competed in UFC, he is regarded as one of the most dangerous heavyweight fighters of all time.Meanwhile, Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier are still active in the UFC, but Daniel Cormier has already announced his retirement, which he will take after competing one last time in UFC. ‘Triple C’ Henry Cejudo also declared his retirement after a successful title defence against Dominick Cruz, while Demetrious Johnson has already parted ways with UFC and is currently signed with One Championship. Also Read | Michael Bisping Bites Back At Conor McGregor After His ‘one-eyed’ RemarkUFC news: Khabib Nurmagomedov next fight updatecenter_img FOLLOW US LIVE TV WATCH US LIVE SUBSCRIBE TO US COMMENTlast_img read more

Pakistan sniff series victory despite Fernando fightback

first_imgLAHORE, (Reuters) – Pakistan erected a run mountain and then hollowed out Sri Lanka’s top and middle order to inch closer to an emotional series victory on the penultimate day of the second and final test yesterday. Following in the footsteps of openers Abid Ali and Shan Masood, Azhar Ali and Babar Azam smashed centuries before Pakistan declared their second innings on 555-3.Chasing 476, Sri Lanka were 212-7 at stumps with Oshada Fernando waging a grim battle with his maiden test century after being let down by the top order.Fernando was batting on 102, having studded the gutsy knock with 13 boundaries, with the tourists staring at a series defeat at Karachi’s National Stadium. The two-match series, which began with a drawn test in Rawalpindi, marks Pakistan’s first tests on home soil since the 2009 militant attack on Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore.Resuming day four on 395-2, Azhar and Babar joined the run-fest as, for only the second time in international cricket, each of the top four batsmen got a hundred in the same innings.Babar was given lbw on 33 but he reviewed the decision to prolong his knock after replays confirmed an inside edge. Azhar hit Vishwa Fernando for three consecutive boundary, while Babar meted out a similar treatment to Lahiru Kumara.Azhar cut Lasith Embuldeniya to bring up his 16th test hundred and made 118 before the left-arm spinner dismissed him stumped.Babar took a single off Kumara to bring up his second hundred of the series and third in the last four tests. Pakistan went at nearly six-an-over in the morning session before declaring at lunch.Needing to bat out five sessions to save the test, Sri Lanka’s top order meekly capitulated to be 97-5.Fernando and Niroshan Dickwella, who made 65, resisted with their 104-run stand for the sixth wicket but it may not be enough to save the match.last_img read more
