Junior Agogo Dead: Former Ghana Striker Dies Aged 40

first_imgFormer Ghana international Junior Agogo has passed away, aged 40.The striker suffered a stroke back in 2015 which left him partially paralysed just two years after retiring from playing.According to a number of reports in Ghana, he passed away in London on Thursday morning.Agent Saif Rubie tweeted: “Just heard the news that one of my first clients ever Junior Agogo has passed away. Still can’t believe it. One of my proudest moments in football is seeing him smash the AFCON in Ghana.”Agogo was a star of the national team and the poster boy of the 2008 African Cup of Nations hosted in Ghana. He wrote his mane into Ghanaian footballing folklore when he scored the winner for the Black Stars in the 2008 African Cup of Nations quarter-final against Nigeria and was a key part in their third-placed finish. In total, he scored 12 goals in 27 caps for the Black Stars between 2006 and 2009.Agogo had a devastating stroke in 2015, and revealed in an emotional BBC interview two years ago that the incident left him “in a bad way”.Agogo told the BBC: “I was running with my dog. I was coming back home. I was near the Marriott Hotel and the stroke happened.“When I woke up I was in hospital with my mum. I couldn’t speak. I was in a bad way.“I had thoughts, but I was like where is my voice. I was baffled, man.”Agogo had a terrific career spanning 15 years in the game and played for 15 teams in total including for Scottish side Hibernian where he retired in 2012.RelatedDavid SimonJune 30, 2017Similar postAsamoah Gyan Rescinds Retirement DecisionMay 22, 2019In “Africa”2019 AFCON: Plateau United Defender and Former Sunderland Striker Make Benin Republic 23-man SquadMay 30, 2019In “AFCON”last_img read more

Rebels hope to get Cloyd’s ‘spark’ back for NCAA tourney

first_img OXFORD – When asked about a roster move he made in early April, Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco paused to chew on his thoughts for a few seconds, grinned, then answered in a tone drenched in sarcasm.“Genius, wasn’t it?” Bianco said.Actually, yes.The statistics say “genius” isn’t a totally unreasonable way to describe Bianco’s late decision to plug Connor Cloyd into the lineup.Freshman Kyle Watson opened the season on fire. Then came a slump. Bianco turned to Cloyd, who had started just one game through the first 26.After the move, the Rebels went 15-12 over the final weeks of the season to earn their spot in the NCAA Tournament, where they’ll open play in the Los Angeles regional against No. 3-seed Maryland on Friday at 6 p.m. (TV: ESPN 3).If the Rebels hope to make a run, they probably need to get Cloyd back in the lineup. The Rebels’ leadoff man strained his oblique late in the series against Mississippi State earlier this month. He hasn’t played since. But Bianco is optimistic the speedster could be back in time for Friday.“We feel pretty good he’ll be ready to go this weekend,” Bianco said.Cloyd said before the Southeastern Conference Tournament that he felt healthy enough to play. Turns out that was a little premature.“He’s just trying to be positive,” Bianco said. “There was no way he could have played.”Cloyd took live swings for the first time during Ole Miss’ Monday practice. Before, he’d been relegated to hitting off a tee.“He’s a sparkplug for us,” catcher Austin Knight said. “When he got inserted into the lineup, it was a big boost for us. Having him out, we’ve still won games, but I think offensively it felt different without him.”Without Cloyd in the lineup, Ole Miss averages 4.13 runs per game. When he’s in, the Rebels score nearly 6 runs per contest. With Cloyd in the leadoff spot, the Rebels have raised their batting average nearly 16 points.“We feel it. We feel he’s (missing) in the lineup,” shortstop Errol Robinson said. “He provides a spark. We’re ready for him to give it back to us.”Cloyd, who began his college career at Oregon before transferring to Tacoma Community College, leads Ole Miss with a .400 batting average and a .467 on-base percentage.“I’m telling you, 99 percent of the time,” Robinson said, “Connor Cloyd is going to get on base.”Cloyd entered the final two weeks of the season hotter than ever. He had a hit in nine of the last 10 games, including eight multi-hit performances.“Yeah, it’s pretty frustrating,” Cloyd said. “Especially when you feel like you’re in a zone.”Robinson, who leads the team in hits, has been bumped up to the leadoff role in Cloyd’s absence. He’s done well. But not as well as Cloyd, he willingly admits.“I’m not as consistent as he is as a leadoff hitter,” Robinson said. “We’ve missed him, for sure. We need him.”Contact Riley Blevins at Follow @Riley_Blevins on Twitter.last_img read more

Latest: Liverpool 1 Chelsea 1

first_imgGary Cahill hauled the visitors level at Anfield after Emre Can’s effort had deflected in off the Chelsea defender to give Liverpool an early lead. Can tried his luck from long range and the German’s shot looped into the net after striking Cahill’s shoulder, giving wrong-footed keeper Thibaut Courtois no chance. Can had gone close with another deflected shot in the opening minute, when the ball flashed just wide after hitting John Terry.AdChoices广告Chelsea responded strongly to going behind and equalised with the help of goal-line technology – ironically in front of the Kop, where Luis Garcia’s infamous 2005 Champions League semi-final goal against them was allowed to stand after being adjudged to have crossed the line.Cesc Fabregas’ corner was flicked on by Diego Costa and after Simon Mignolet superbly saved Terry’s header, Cahill did enough to score despite the keeper’s best efforts on the line.Cahill was soon at the centre of the action again, blocking Raheem Sterling’s shot with his shoulder as the home fans appealed in vain for a penalty.Ramires was included the Chelsea side, while Liverpool recalled Steven Gerrard, Sterling, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren and Mario Balotelli to their starting line-up.Back after recovering from a recent injury, Ramires returned along with Cesar Azpilicueta, who is available again after a suspension.Willian and Filipe Luis are on the Blues bench, as are Didier Drogba and the fit-again Loic Remy. Liverpool: Mignolet, Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno, Gerrard, Can, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling, Balotelli. Subs: Jones, Toure, Lucas, Allen, Lallana, Borini, Lambert. Chelsea: Courtois; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta; Matic, Fabregas; Ramires, Oscar, Hazard; Costa. Subs: Cech, Zouma, Filipe Luis, Mikel, Willian, Remy, Drogba.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Slain NYPD officer was 12-year police veteran, mother of 3

first_img Related ABC News(NEW YORK) — The NYPD police officer who was shot and killed in an “unprovoked attack” early Wednesday was a mother of three and a 12-year veteran of the force, officials said.Miosotis Familia, 48, “gave her life protecting a neighborhood that had been plagued by gang gun violence,” said Patrick J. Lynch, president of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, a union for New York City police officers.“Fully knowing the dangers that she faced, she suited up in uniform every day and stood tall against those who threaten and terrorize the good folks of the Bronx,” Lynch told reporters at a press conference Wednesday.Familia and her partner were sitting in a marked police command vehicle in the Bronx when she was shot in the head around 12:30 a.m., New York City Police Commissioner James O’Neill said. Surveillance footage from the scene shows a suspect “purposely” walking up to the command video and firing into the passenger’s side window, a police source told ABC News.Familia was writing in her memo book at the time of the shooting, indicating that she may not have seen the suspect approach the car, police sources said. The police vehicle had been parked in that location since March due to increased gang activity in the area, O’Neill said. After Familia was shot, her partner called for assistance while other uniformed officers chased the suspect on foot. The gunman, identified as 34-year-old New York City resident Alexander Bonds, was shot and killed by officers as he drew a revolver.Familia was pronounced dead at St. Barnabus Hospital in the Bronx at 3:37 a.m., police sources said. Members of the community paid tribute to the officer by lighting candles outside the NYPD’s 46th precinct in the Bronx. Copyright © 2017, ABC Radio.
